A Moment of Gathering in the Clearing

As the seasons change, the shifting colors and temperatures make me dream of taking a moment to gather outdoors; to entertain and create with those closest to me. I thought I’d show you all my favorite spot on the land for this kind of intentional gathering.

Welcome to The Clearing - a calm, enchanted space nestled in the woods on our property at Thornton Farm. This place is one of my favorite and most sacred escapes on our land. The Clearing lends itself to creating a distinctive feeling for entertaining - its laid back, yet intentional and warm (even when it’s chilly).

WHAT ARE YOU DREAMING OF

CREATING THIS SEASON?

Let’s dream together and create a table setting in this idyllic setting! I want the design to have an earthy and enchanting feeling; al fresco dining with harvest warmth.  This will be the perfect spot to gather and linger under the stars. Since the leaves are getting darker and the outdoor light feels warmer, my color palette is reflecting the warmth of the fall season. I want the florals and place settings to mimic the landscape’s rich hues - golden light, amber, russet red and woodsy browns.

After inspiration, it’s time for the details. I set the dining table with mismatched chairs for a curated vibe, vintage brass candlesticks for a warm glow, flax linen dinner napkins, and vintage dinnerware. Let’s add some of our favorite patina-stained crocks and breadboards to hold hors d'oeuvres and sides, and foraged cattail cuttings for the centerpiece. Our curated pieces from many generations add to the warm feeling of our table and create layers of detail for our friends to discover.

Starting with pear + prosecco cocktails, the menu includes earthy elements while keeping the palette crisp and clean. Wild mushrooms, spinach, and shaved parmesan mingle in a warm salad with toasted bruschetta and fragrant olive oil. For dessert is a family heirloom from my grandmother: a delicious spice cake. The cake batter is layered together with several spices and brown sugar, then served with a sprinkle of nutmeg and a dollop of sweet whipped cream.

Heirloom pottery and vases are beautiful vessels for centerpieces or serving, and cutting boards are the perfect canvas for bread and herbs. Vintage silverware is one of my favorite things to collect; it really adds an elevated touch to any dining experience. We have an amazing selection of antique silverware in the shop. Don’t forget to explore the nature around you for fresh cuttings - you never know what beautiful branches are already growing in your surroundings!

Whenever I see fellow designers or friends creating outdoor gatherings, it always inspires me to head to The Clearing and create again. I usually think and dream, “How can I create that feeling in my space?” It’s not as hard as it may seem, and I invite you to create your own special “clearing” wherever you have room, with whatever you have on hand. I like to add to a ‘do’s and don'ts’ list after gathering. It’s very helpful as my at-home entertaining style evolves, and keeps me constantly inspired to try new ways/methods of gathering. If you need a place to start, I’ve compiled all my favorite tips, tricks, and checklists in my Guide to Gathering!

Best advice of all: use your imagination and have fun; it’s all about bringing your unique vision to life! Pick up inspiration wherever you can and use those findings to fuel your imagination. I hope you’ve had a wonderful time creating with me at The Clearing today. Until next time!

Hugs,

Paige
