The Collected Bar

“The collected bar is an ongoing story that only gets better with time.” - Paige

I walked past the bar in my kitchen recently and thought it would be fun to restyle the shelves with curated pieces from Shop the Farm. It ended up being a really fun task, and I want to share some insights from my design process for a bar (or nook) that is collected, curated, and timeless.

If you've been following me for a while, you know my love for a mix-and-matched bar that’s layered. Antique barware, art, unique vessels, vintage busts, hand-thrown pottery and some whimsical items make for an aesthetic that’s unique and full of character. Adding a lamp not only grounds the space, but enhances the look with natural ambience.

“My take on a bar space is never to let it intimidate you; have fun with it. So, break the mundane stereotypes and rules. Let your creativity flow.” - Paige

A helpful hint while treasure-hunting for any style of glassware: Hold each piece in your hand. I love to imagine who might have used the vessel in a previous life. Maybe it was Humphrey Bogart or Ingrid Bergman while they filmed "Casablanca?" One can wish! Also, ask yourself these questions:

  • Does this item visually strike you? How and why?

  • Does it feel good in your hand? Is the shape comfortable?

  • Can you imagine you or your guests enjoying their favorite drink from it?

  • Would your guests like this style as well?

  • Is it the right color and tone for your aesthetic?

  • Does it compliment your current barware collection well?

I gravitate towards a neutral palette, clear glass with a touch of detail. I suggest leaning into what color tones make you happy. I used deep browns and ochre with hints of gold for this refresh. Think of my collected bar as a place to start for your bar or favorite nook.

“I love to incorporate vintage art into my shelves. It elevates the space by creating depth and interest.”

- Paige

Why not add a lamp to your bar space? Though unexpected, it enhances the look with a soft, moody glow and creates its own atmosphere. You'll find that guests gravitate to it and linger with conversation and laughter.

My Checklist for a Collected Bar:

  • Double Old Fashioned and Collins glasses, assorted wine glasses, goblets & champagne coupes.

  • Whimsical cocktail shakers, ice buckets, decanters & assorted carafes.

  • Assorted utensils for stirring, ice tongs, grapevine corkscrews, and quirky bottle openers made of horn.

  • Vintage cocktail napkins & unique bar towels

  • Assorted brass and silver trays, small wooden cutting boards & hand-thrown pottery to serve garnishes and nuts, etc.

  • A tall, clear wine vessel to corral all the corks enhances the space with a touch of texture.

  • I love adding a personal touch of foraged, fresh cuts from our land or flowers from a local florist or market. It sets the tone and softens your space.
